Bridges 1 Sierra Bridges Dr. Candie McKee English II 24, March 2020 Problem Identification Essay Since 1959 when Barbie was first established there have been debates on whether Barbie is creating unrealistic beauty standards for young girls and if it affects them as they grow into young adults in society. Some believe that because Barbie is created with long thin legs, beautiful blonde hair, blue eyes, and a tiny waist that it sets an intention for young girls to think that is what they should look like. But others see Barbie as much more than that to a young girl. They see Barbie as a strong and powerful woman who has had performed and exceeded in nearly every career imaginable, owns her own house and car, has a diverse group of friends, and has a boyfriend that she decides to have. For years Barbie has been looked at in both good and bad ways, but in today’s world, people are more accepting of all shapes, sizes, colors, and ethnicities, that they believe Barbie should portray the reality of humans and the way they look.
