HCAD 600: APA Writing Guide Critique The American Psychological Association (APA) manual is “the” guide for preparing research papers. Other guides like the AMA and MLA prepare books for publication. The UMUC (University of Maryland University College) library uses all three citations. Students can download and store any literary format in Reference Works. However, HCAD 600 recommends using the APA citation for research papers. The manual is technical in nature containing specifications mainly for psychological studies. Instructions on proper grammar are also discussed in great detail which benefits all types of readers. The APA manual (5 th edition) is divided into nine chapters. The first four chapters describe what goes into a research paper. Chapters five through nine discuss what types of manuscripts get published.
