South and the Law Study Guide Test 3 Plessy V. Ferguson - Gunnar Myrdal’s American Dilemma - an important book by Swedish sociologist Gunnar Myrdal. The book is an examination of the black problem in America. It was written in 1944. It ran experiments on children and proved that the segregation system effected a child’s perception of themselves. Black children chose a black doll over a white doll. - The book proved that segregation created a hierarchy that wasn’t equal. The NAACP realized that they can mount a campaign based on this. Strike at Moton High School, Virginia - 1951 in Prince Edward County Virginia. Moton is an all black high school named after Robert Moton, the successor to Booker T. Washington as head of the Muskegee institute. - The school was in bad shape structurally and was in the same town as Farmville high an all white school that had nice facilities. Moton was built to hold 180 students but held 450 so it was very overcrowded. Some classes were even taught in old school buses. - Barbra Johns a student decided that her and the brightest students would protest. They got on the loud speaker and told teachers to go home and they started to protest inadequate
