ELEMENTS OF DESIGN 2 ELEMENTS OF DESIGN IN 8 MILE A director, production designer, art director, and cinematographer collaborate to design elements that create a film. The design elements such as setting, lighting; and costume, makeup and hairstyle also referred to as the mise-en-scene accentuate the figures within a frame. In the scene Rabbit Battles Lyckety-Splyt from the 2002 movie 8 Mile the design elements created through artist collaboration are no exception to showing what role they can play in assisting a movie with getting a point across the viewing audience aside from dialogue. The artists who were involved in the production of the movie 8 Mile are: Cutis Hanson as director, cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto, production designer Philip Messina, and art director Kevin Kavanaugh (James & Radden, 2010). Curtis Hanson overall role in the design process was to set the tone for the movie and collaborate with his team to use design elements that would effectively portray the story. As stated on Contactmusic.com, “ 8 Mile was an opportunity to once again explore a unique stratum of American culture, to peel back its layers and take a look at people struggling to find their way”(2011). Cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto role in the movie was photography/camera and lighting. The production designer Phillip Messina’s role was, “developing, coordinating, facilitating, and overseeing the design of the sets, both on stage or practical locations” (Jeppson, 2007). Art Director Kevin Kavanaugh acted as a supervisor to the makeup, hair, and wardrobe departments, and as a consultant to the camera, production design, special effects, and compositing departments” (Contactmusic.com.2011). Cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto does a great job with the lighting in this scene. This overall scene appears dark with deem light from outside that appears to come through the few windows but it doesn’t provide the light that is mainly used to set the mood in this scene. The

A few large white fluorescent lights are projected towards the stage to bring the main characters in to focus. While this lighting allows the viewing audience to be able to see the packed crowd down to close-up face shots in the scene it provides the most light to the stage where the main characters Rabbit and Lyckety-Splyt appear in a spot
