Eng225 Week 4 DB 1 “ "Auteur" is the French word for author, and therein lies the meaning of auteur theory when applied to film directing; it posits that the director is indeed the author of the film, imprinting it with his personal vision”( Goodykoontz & Jacob, 2011, Sec. 7.3). Explain why the auteurist theory has become so important to film analysis? “The theory gives enormous, almost total responsibility for a film’s success or failure (artistically, not at the box office) to the director” ( Goodykoontz & Jacob, 2011, Sec. 7.3). The auteurist theory has become important to film analysis because they see it as an easier way to judge the overall all film. As stated in our text, “Given the importance of the director’s role in the making of a movie and how easily identifiable certain cinematic styles can be throughout the work of some directors, it is often convenient to discuss a film as though the director was the sole creator, like the author of a book” ( Goodykoontz & Jacob, 2011, Sec. 7.3). It is common knowledge that actors within a film may be judged/ critiqued based on their performance. However, when speaking in terms of a film overall we can’t judge the film based on one actor’s performance. It
