Geographic Features: Himalayas, northeast; the Tharr Desert-west, Indos River - west, Ganges River- east • 5000 BC  Indus River Valley – Neolithic people • 2500 BC Writing emerged • 2300 BC trade with middle east  Indus Valley / Harappa civilization • Mohenjo-Daro – enormous by ancient standards. It’s three miles around Planned streets – checkerboard pattern Evidence of public spaces + drainage system - underground They had a citadel – fortified tower Found in 1921 by Sir Mortimer Wheeler • Some evidence of the failing civilization – The river dried up; foreign invaders can also have been a reason • 1500 BC Indus civilization fails – could be one of the following – no one really knows • Dried up riverbed • Plague • Invaders Aryans in 1500 BC invade India • Vedas – Religious text but important for early knowledge
