Steroid Hormones All derived from cholesterol Intermediate steps in going to hormones Depending on conditions from intermediate can go various ways to diff final products *Many steroids are intermediates to other steroids Mostly produced in gonads --> Bird and fish => brain is major endocrine organ Estrogen - Estradiol, also key in male sexual behavior Androgens - testosterone, DHT (dihydrotestosterone), androstenediol Progestins - progesterone Cortico steroids - cortisol, aldosterone Key enzymes: Aromatase testosterone --> Androstenediol 5 α reductase testosterone --> DHT Adrenal Cortex Regulated by anterior pituitary Hypothalamus --> CRH --> Anterior Pituitary --> ACTH --> Adrenal Cortex Cortisol - released in response to stress --> long term activation leads to chronic, high levels Depression has heritable components, but also strong environmental component => some alleles of CRH can protect individuals from depression after a history of childhood abuse CRH receptor regulated by (-) feedback mechanism
