Key for AST3018 HW 6 34 Points Leah Simon 8 Dec 2009 Space Based Telescopes(3 pts) There are three major advantages to putting telescopes in space. 1.) There is no atmospheric turbulence to contend with, so the telescope is always diffraction limited. 2.) There is no absorption by the atmosphere so all wavelengths are accessible. 3.) Longer integration times are possible due to no sky background. 4.2 (2 pts) For a diffraction limited source, θ = λ/D so if we assume λ = 550 nm (green light) and knowing that there are 2.06x10 5 arcsec/radian, we find θ = 0 . 023arcsec. 4.9 (5 pts) Here we manipulate the distance modulus equation to find our result. Since f eye = f 0 * π ( d eye / 2) 2 and f telescope = f 0 * π ( D telescope / 2) 2 we find m - M = - 2 . 5 log 10 ± d D ! 2 (1) Setting this equal to the distance modulus m - M = - 2 . 5 log 10 " ² r 1 r 2 ³ 2 # (2) We find r telescope = D × r eye d (3) Assuming the eye is 5 mm in diameter and a m=6 star is at 10 parsec, a 5 meter telescope can see 10,000 pc away. 4.22 (3 pts)
