Gender and race are well worn targets for discrimination. The two share a long history of marginalization, assumptions, dehumanizing treatment and varied responses to the discrimination each has endured. Two poems, “Secretary Chant,” by Marge Piercy written in 1936, and “The Negro Speaks of Rivers,” written by Langston Hughes in 1921, speak to these different aspects of discrimination, particularly prominent in the early part of the twentieth century, Great paper and I hope that my comments help you out. Studying and comparing the two tells us a great deal about the potentially corrosive effects of being labeled “the other,” and the potential resilience of the human spirit.
