Arthur Yasyulevich Erin Lesh English 113-01 05 June 2011 Symbolism In literature In literature symbolism, tells the story and provides an explanation of what is really happening. Plot, setting, and characters can be seen as the outside layer of the story, while symbolism of these and other aspects of the story can be thought as a whole other level that in a sense improves the story. While reading O'Connor's short story “A good man is hard to find”, you notice that symbolism appears a few times throughout the story, even though it might be a little difficult at first, whether it was from the grandmother and the dress she wore or something like faith and death altogether. When reading “A good man is hard to find”, readers can tell from the beginning of the story the main character and star of this reading is the Grandmother. And at first glance of reading this story the grandmother looks like any other grandma. She’s a mouth that never seems to close, a woman who is always remembering the past, and “lady” that dresses really nice. O’Connor mentions that she wore white gloves, her nice hat, purse, and big black valise. What
