Case Study 2 Case Study: Riverside State Hospital Case summary: Riverside State Hospital is a five-hundred bed state psychiatric facility that operates on the basis of court referrals or requires physicians’ orders for patient admission. A few days ago, 56 year old Horace James Wilcox Jr., one of the hospital’s resident patients was killed when a wall in his room collapsed. The hospital claims to have no prior knowledge of the walls or ceiling needing any repair and referrers to the incident as a “tragedy”. However, the patient had previously displayed concern and anxiety about the walls and the ceiling in his room. The hospital staff did not respond to his concerns believing it was delusions that had manifested as a result of a plane crash he had recently witnessed on the TV news. The patient did suffer from traumatic amnesia which the hospital staff believed was aggravated by his belief that he was directly affected by anything he observed on TV (Eisenberg, Goodall, & Trethewey, 2010). The hospital staff did attempt to restrict his access to television which only resulted in the patient becoming depressed. Rather than treat the depression the hospital staff restored his television privileges. At this point the hospital would appear to have a believable defense; however, it’s
