Greta Streed Reading Response 4: Michael Rose I loved Rose’s first description of the kids on the bus as “grease-pencil artists extraordinaire”. He makes them sound talented, with potential rather than just misfits. The next thing to strike my interest was on the second page where he described coming into school as bringing “with it forms and releases and assessments. Mercy relied on a series of tests…for placement”. School shouldn’t bring up feelings of tests and forms it should remind you of learning and working hard and growing. Students shouldn’t be placed based on tests because they aren’t true indicators of potential. When Rose rights that the “vocational track [was] a euphemism for the bottom level” it’s so telling of schools can be so quick to label students and by doing so place limits on their potential. He says that, “the vocational track, however, is most often a place for those who are just not making it, a dumping ground for the disaffected”. This is completely wrong and unfair. The students who are “disaffected” are the ones who need more attention not a dumping ground. “Mostly the teachers had no idea of how to engage the imaginations of us kids who were scuttling along the bottom of the pond”.
