Practice and Discussion 1 Practice and Discussion Questions Practice Quiz Questions 4. Why do some economists consider human resources more important than natural resources in determining a country’s future? Economists see human resources as more important because there are things that humans can add that no other resource can. For example, humans add to a population by the means of larger markets, a larger availability of workers and greater intelligence and intellect and ingenuity all which allow for the creation of new materials and ways of doing things. 5. In which regions of the world will most population growth occur during the twenty-first century? What conditions contribute to rapid population in these locations? The areas with the greater population growth will be in Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East. To take this even further those areas of Nigeria, Ethiopia, and Bangladesh all predict major rises in population density during this time period. There are many things that can be attributed to the above increase in these populations. In these areas economics, politics, religion, and civil unrest all add to high birth rates and low contraception use which aid in the population growth. 8. What is the dependency ration and how might it affect the United States in the future? The dependency ration of an area is the number of non working members compared to the number of working members in a population. The United States may be affected in the future because there is an inadequate number of younger individuals to fill the positions of those who are retiring which can have a profound impact on the economy. 1. Why did ecologists want to reintroduce wolves to Yellowstone Park? What goals did they have, and have their goals been achieved? Ecologists reintroduce packs of wolves into Yellowstone Park as a way for regeneration on a whole system basis to occur. These animals were used as a means to an end because other animal species that relied on the wolves began to become extremely overpopulated which was hurting the ecosystem as a whole. There goals were achieved because the wolves began to control some of the other populations which allowed Yellowstone Park to begin to flourish in more ways than just one. Not only did the animal population become controlled, but the plant life that one time existed also began to flourish as well. 9.
