Modeling is a crucial piece of the system design
process
System design is process of defining a system that
accomplishes a given task while meeting certain
performance and reliability criteria and monetary
constraints
Don’t throw sensors, actuators, and springs together
and expect it to work flawlessly
Do a careful analysis of dynamics based on reasonable
mathematical models
What is reasonable?
Often there is a tradeoff between simplicity and
accuracy
Lumped parameter models like mass spring are good
at low frequency and small displacements
At high frequency, may need to account for distributed mass
In modeling, you decide how good your model must
be
