SCHIP  President vetoed and it is unlikely that congress will have the votes to override  SCHIP does not create any individual entitlement to benefits (unlike Medicaid) For example, if a child is too rich to have Medicaid but too poor to have insurance they do  not automatically qualify for SCHIP   Medicare Most health insurance does not cover the cost of a nursing home Insurance would cover medical treatment received in the nursing home If you have health insurance or Medicare it will not pay for the daily room and board charge  (which is a LOT) Medicaid pays about 70% of the cost of nursing home care in the US Medicaid is the way that middle class people pay their nursing home expenses without  forcing their adult children to pay for it There are ways to work the system: displacing assets to other family members Most commercial health insurance does not pay for long-term care Generally Medicare will not pay for long-term care Usually people go into the nursing home with Medicare and then switch over to Medicaid
