Multi-Stage Amplifiers EEE 3308C Spring 2011 1 EEL 3308C – Design and Experiment Project Lab #6 Multi-Stage Amplifier (4/11 – 4/15) 1. Objectives This project explores the use of multiple stages to achieve multiple specifications that are not possible in a single stage amplifier design. The use of simulation (via LTSPICE) as an integral part of the design methodology and is also emphasized. Since MOSFET and BJT transistors have analogous small-signal properties, the analogy between MOSFET and BJT E-circuits are explored in the simulation, design, and test of current mirror circuits. 2. Prelab (4/11 – 4/15) TO TURN IN TO YOUR TA ON A SEPARATE SHEET a) Which single transistor BJT amplifier exhibits relatively large input resistance and relatively large voltage gain? Write down a sample circuit of this type. b) In the amplifier described in a), how can the input resistance be increased further? Write down a modified version of the sample circuit written down in a). (Hint: base reflectance rule) c) Which transistor BJT amplifier exhibits relatively large input resistance, low output resistance, and nearly unity voltage gain? Write down a sample circuit of this type. 3. Analysis, Design, and Simulation (4/11 – 4/15) 3.1. Reference Current Mirror: Instructions: a) Design a BJT NPN current mirror shown in Figure 1.
