Diode Applications EEE 3308C Fall 2010 1 EEE 3308C –Design and Experiment Project Lab #3 Diode Applications 1. Objectives The objectives of this Design and Experiment Project are to characterize a diode and to investigate various diode application circuits. References to Chapter 4 material pertinent to the design and experiment project are noted below. 2. Equipment You will need the following: National Instruments ELVIS Textronix TDS2024 DSO 1N4148 Switching Diode 1N4732 Zener Diode Various capacitors and resistors. 3. Pre-lab (to be done before labs of week 2/15 – 2/21) IN YOUR LAB NOTEBOOK (1) Read and understand the relevant sections in Chapter 4 of the textbook. Pay close attention to pages 179-181, 189-193, 194-197 and 200-206 in the book. (2) Find the important information about the diodes you will be using in this project from datasheets available on the web. Record (e.g., print/cut/paste) the current-voltage curves for all diodes in your laboratory notebook citing where you found the information—the reference (i.e. URL) , their typical forward voltages, and the Zener voltage and the Zener impedance for the Zener diode (using a best-fit line for the 5 – 10 mA Zener current range). TO TURN IN TO YOUR TA ON A SEPARATE SHEET (No credit unless turned in.) (3) Calculate the total incremental resistance of five 1N4148 diodes connected in series carrying a nominal forward current of 5 mA through them. Refer to data in the 1N4148 datasheet. (4) For circuits a) and b), sketch the transfer function, i.e. V o on y-axis and V i on x-axis, for circuits c) and d) sketch the output, V o (t), i.e. V o (t) on y-axis and time on the x-axis for a 1kHz 1 Volt peak-to-peak sine wave (note that the sine wave in c) has a -4 Volt DC offset). Remember to label all relevant information.
