Print This Page   Lesson 7  Emotion and Motivation  Introduction: Connecting Your Learning  In this lesson, you will move to the other side of the mind - from thoughts, perceptions, and memories to  feelings  and  desires Emotions  and  motives  give color and drama to human existence. In the upcoming  lessons on personality, mental health, and social psychology, you will be studying motivation and emotion in  some depth from a number of different perspectives. You will find once again that psychological processes are only relatively distinct from each other because they  interact  and  influence each other . Cognition affects emotions and motives, as well as the other way around.  What you think and believe affects what you feel and desire and how you feel effects how well you think and  remember. Culture also influences emotion and motivation.  In addition, you will again see how the processes of the brain, the nervous system, and the body affect  psychological processes. In general, there are many  different theoretical perspectives  on emotion and  motivation. Refer back to the different theoretical perspectives discussed in Chapter One. Behaviorism,  cognitive psychology, psychodynamic psychology, and social-cultural psychology all have ideas relevant to  the study of emotion and motivation because learning, thinking, culture, and biology all affect these  processes. Focusing Your Learning  Course Competencies Covered in this Lesson: Describe and relate the biological, behavioral, stimulus, cognitive, and social factors in  motivation and emotion.
