The Euthyphro Dilemma Plato’s dialogue of The Euthyphro is exemplary and controversial; it brings up the issue about moral principles. (Taylor) The dialogue deals with Socrates and Euthyphro, who clams to be one of the most knowledgeable people in Athens, and a conversation that leaves an open ending. Socrates shows Euthyphro’s ignorance by asking him the ultimate question; “Is something dear to the gods because it is good, or is something good because it is dear to the gods“. (Plato) The Euthyphro Dilemma has been a controversial issue for ages as people have tried to argue their beliefs and views about the question that Socrates presented to Euthyphro. (Holt) The inconclusive ending of this dialogue presents an interesting view. What is interesting about the end of this dialogue is not that it does not match up with the rest of the Euthyphro ; it shows an interesting view compared to Plato’s other dialogues. (Plato) It is interesting because it is not made clear as to where Plato stands on this issue. Whether he has a focal explanation for piety, or whether he knows the solution to the question presented, and if he has his own believes and answers why are they not presented in Euthyphro is a 1
