Vietnam Airlines pilot Quoc Viet Lai, 58, appeared in Sydney's Central Local Court on Tuesday, charged with 40 counts of money laundering. He was arrested on Monday by the Australian Crime Commission (ACC) and is accused of smuggling nearly $4 million in drug profits out of Australia. Lai was arrested after flying from Ho Chi Minh City to Australia, and has been accused of collecting the money between June 2005 and May 2006 from a remittance company with offices in Sydney and Melbourne, and transporting it to Vietnam. He was arrested by the ACC-led Task Force Gordian - set up in 2005 to investigate organised crime networks - acting on an outstanding warrant. According to a police statement of facts tendered to the court, Lai was introduced to the Long Thanh Money Transfer Company by Vietnam Airlines pilot Van Dang Tran, who last August
