Brief History of the Internet ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network) In the late 60’s, the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) started an experimental project on ways to interconnect different kinds of networks One objective is to build a communication network that can survive disruptiveness, e.g. a nuclear war. Robustness & Survivability Capability to withstand losses of large portions of the underlying networks ARPANET is a precursor of the Internet Sputnik: 1 st satellite

Brief History of the Internet NSFNET ARPANET quickly evolved and was combined with other networks and resulted in NSFNET in 1986, which became a major component of the Internet General purpose research network to connect supercomputing centers to NSF and other academic research centers NSFNET terminated in 1994 due to privatization of the Internet Individual users are hence connected to Internet at a fee.
