Naina Vohra BioG 104 Section 18 Tuesday 1:25 pm Sordaria Genetics Summary A model organism in biological studies, Sordaria fimicola , a member of the fungi phylum Ascomycota, is able to reproduce rapidly and sexually, and, because of its haploid nature, it displays a perfect mapping of phenotype onto its genotype. We used the Sordaria in order to observe the inheritance patterns of the genes for ascospore color, coded for by two separate alleles: the “gray” allele, and the “tan” allele. A mutation in the “gray” allele (g) results in a tan genotype, with a phenotype of g t + . The mutant “tan” allele results in a gray genotype with the phenotype g + t. The wild type (black) spores have a phenotype of g + t + , and the double-mutant colorless spores have a phenotype of g t. Using our observations, we preformed crosses between the wild type and gray strains, and the wild type and tan strains, and with the help of the chi-squared test, we determined the gene-centromere mapping distances of the two alleles.
