Essay 3 Explain the open vs. closed system view of organizations, both in terms of organic vs. mechanistic organizational design and the idea of population ecology. How are both of these phenomena linked to sciences like biology? Environmental Diversity is the factor that best links organizational configuration and operational design to biology. Biology studies origin, growth, reproduction, structure, and behavior; all aspects defined to some degree by a company’s environment. The environment that a company looks to approach can be defined by any number of variables. The most common tend to be the diversity of people, geography, and wants or needs of an area; but are certainly not restricted to these factors. Companies are forced to make many decisions based on these factors, such as management styles and structural design. In an open system, a company interacts with its environment to survive.
