This essay talks about AIDS and HIV and the implications of the two. HIV (Human Immunedifiency Virus) is what causes AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Virus) . ]. According to the CDC (2006), "This virus may be passed from one person to another when infected blood, semen, or vaginal secretions come in contact with an uninfected person's broken skin or mucous membranes."” HIV/AIDS first manifested itself in the gay population in the early 1980s, leading to a stigma based on sexuality that prevented a conservative, Republican-lead United States government from even acknowledging the beginning of a serious pandemic that would grow to infect millions worldwide.” (2006) When it comes to the AIDS population, it breaks it down to many intravenous drug users and the gay population. Back in the day which I believe was about 1989, many people said that if you contracted AIDS it was just like a death sentence, due to the fact that they were no drugs available to help your body fight it off. "Scientists at the National Institutes of Health estimate that since 1989, anti-retroviral medications have provided HIV-positive Americans with years of extended life. But none of these drugs can cure HIV/AIDS, many have side effects that can be severe, and most are expensive. What's more, after 20 years on AIDS drugs, some people develop resistance to the drugs and no longer respond to treatment.” (MayoClinic.com, HIV/AIDS, June 23, 2009.) When it comes to people getting and contracting AIDS I feel so sorry for them, not only are they frowned upon but yet they are also discriminated against. We all know that most (not all) yet most of the people that get AIDS is from drug use or intercourse, they automatically think things about that persons personal life. It is a fact that AIDS takes a lifetime of treatments, and is so very expensive to be able to treat and maintain it. If one was to disclose any of that type of information to another person without permission there are so many different and difficult
