2 NURSE LEADER Background There were many qualities that contribute to an effective leader. These qualities include leadership innovation, emotional intelligence, spiritual leadership, transformational leadership, conflict management, and crisis management. Melanie Campanilla exemplifies an effective leader. She is a Nurse Manager of Family Centered Care in OB/ Postpartum floor at Inova Fairfax with a BSN, RN3, and RNC. She can be found in the Inova Annual Nursing Report as follows: . I interviewed her early November to talk about her leadership styles. She shared methods she has learned throughout her career that shaped her into the person she is now. Mrs. Melanie Campanilla has been working for Inova Fairfax hospital as a nurse manager for 9 years. She is supervising five to seven OB nurses per shift. She openly shared personal stories in her unit; how she makes improvement, how she listens with a purpose, what is her views on spirituality, reinforcing balanced feedback, handling conflicts, and preparing for the worse case scenario. Throughout the interview, it is apparent why the staffed nurses under her are content and happy. I was curious how she played a role in the people she supervises; how her leadership styles and past experiences make her a magnetic manager. Innovative Leadership Innovative leadership is the ability to combine different styles of leadership to influence the people under you; these leaders are creative and able to see the big picture with an open mind (Leadership, Innovation, 2018). Having an innovative perspective means looking around more. Noticing what is happening currently in the organization rather than looking at irrelevant data

They look for distinction, differences, patterns, things from several perspectives, and unmet needs (Leadership, Innovation, 2018). Mrs. Campanilla stated, “when I want to improve something in our organization, I assess the situation first. I show my team how it is going to play out so they understand the good and bad that can potentially happen; this way, that they can critically think any possible solutions.” She made it clear that the path to improve an organization demands a particular approach of creative innovation; directing with unique styles that influence a team include identifying issues and initiating changes toward improvement (Leadership, Innovation, 2018). Emotional Intelligence Being aware and in control of your own and other people’s emotions means having high emotional intelligence (Heckemann, Schols, and Halfens, 2015). When we use emotional information to guide how we think and behave, we increase the level of our self-awareness, self- regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills (Heckemann, Schols, and Halfens, 2015).
