Rohimone EDP 310 10260 8/2/11 What is a Strategic Learner? “Strategic Learners are hardworking, resourceful, and consistent, with their work. They are able to persevere through the difficult times put before them and they understand and know how to implement the necessary skills that are essential to becoming a strategic learner.” 8/2/11 Strategic Learners Characteristics 1. Diligent and Resourceful 2. Confident in doing their tasks. 3. Know when they understand new information 4. Use help-seeking strategies 5. Understand that learning is systematic. 8/2/11 Model of Strategic Learning 8/2/11 Click to edit Master subtitle style 8/2/11 Group 2 Click to edit Master subtitle style 8/2/11 The Model of Strategic Learning: The Skill Component 8/2/11 Reach your Goals! • To reach your goals you must know all the elements in the skill component and how they interact with each other • Know how these also interact with the other 3 components (skill, will, & academic environment) • There are 5 types of knowledge, strategies, & tactical skills to become a skilled learner 8/2/11 Knowledge of Self as a Learner • Know your strengths and weaknesses, attitude, motivation, and anxiety when it comes to learning • Know your personal characteristics that impact the difficulty of the info you’re learning • This is a step toward metacognitive awareness & strategic learning • By doing so you can plan to avoid or reduce problems – Ex: join a study group or allocate more 8/2/11 Knowledge of Self cont. • To help develop knowledge of self, one must consider: • Learning preferences/styles • Strengths/weakness • Best/worst time of day • Interests/talents • Least/most favorite activities and/or subjects • Current study habits/practices – Can you adapt strategies for different tasks? • Knowing about ourselves as learners will help us allocate our resources so that we can most efficiently achieve academic success • Must manage both external resources AND personal 8/2/11 Knowledge of Academic Tasks • Understand what is required to successfully complete a given academic task (i.e. a test, quiz, paying attention in class) – Figure out steps to be taken – Figure out how much time is required to reach task goal • Clarifies what the learner needs to think about and do in order to reach a goal. • Also, if you do not know how to identify important information (main ideas), it can be difficult to successfully complete reading 8/2/11 Knowledge of Learning Strategies • Learning Strategy – any thought , behavior or action a student engages in during studying and learning that is intended to influence the acquisition,...
