Ashraf Zeidan 6-30-11 Lab Report Partner- Allaeldean Abdelhadi Acetylsalicylic Acid Purpose- The purpose of this experiment is to purify Acetylsalicylic Acid from other substances using crystallization. And also to determine the purity of the end product by using the melting point. The lab can be considered successful since the melting point of the product (130-134 degrees Celcius) was only 2 degrees stray from the melting point of pure Acetylsalicylic acid (135-136). Experimental- Turn on your hot plate and begin heating a beaker filled 1/3 with water to use as a hot water bath later. (The water should be heated to 90°C.) Place one boiling stone, approximately 1 g of salicylic acid and approximately 2 mL of acetic anhydride in a test tube. Remember to record all digits from balance and to read graduated cylinder to proper decimal places. Add 5 drops of phosphoric acid to the tube while stirring constantly. The reaction will be exothermic. Mix the reactants thoroughly. Place in hot water bath and stir or shake to ensure all
