Look at the saturation temperature coinciding with the given pressure. If the temperature is less, than you have a subcooled liquid. For future reference, the enthalpy of the subcooled liquid is approximately equal to h f for saturated liquid at the given temperature. If the temperature is greater than you have a superheated vapor and you need to go to superheated tables to get other properties.

If your value is between vf and vg for the given temp., then you are in the two-phase region. If your value is less than v f , then you are subcooled liquid. If your value is greater than v g , then you are superheated. See Example 3.1 in your text.

UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA Lecture No. 5 3 Thermodynamics Quality A term used to describe the relationship between vapor and liquid in a two phase mixture of a pure substance The term considers that having more vapor than liquid represents a higher quality mixture. Generally in using steam to drive a turbine, the higher quality steam has more energy and is what you want to drive the turbine. • Quality = x = m vapor /m total = m g /(m f + m g ) You’ll probably see this on the FE exam!!
