Anshum Sood Ms. Brydon June 21, 2007 AP Environmental Science Summer Work: Summertime – and the Air Will Get Bad, Officials Say Since the temperatures are increasing now that it is summer, transportations officials are telling people to “spare the air” and “dump the pump”. The Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District and Regional Transit are advising people to take little, but very impacting steps to help better the air quality. In the summer, due to the excess heat, air quality worsens significantly because of the greater carbon emissions emitted by the people. In the summer, people drive around more due to the scorching temperature, we do more barbecues because of the nice temperature, and we more our lawns more often because it doesn’t rain anymore; all of which increase carbon emissions. Also, in the summer, ridges of high pressure clamp down over the valley, resulting in the confining of pollution, causing more spare the air days and less desirable air quality for people, especially the ones with breathing issues.
