2 Should the Endangered Species Act Be Strengthened? By the early 1900s America had witnessed the disappearance of several spectacular animal species due to aggressive unregulated hunting. In the 1950s and 60s there was a population crash in some very usable animal species. “Extinction is normal. 99.9 percent of all the species have become extinct, according to some estimates.” (Easton, 2009) This is when one of the most powerful environmental acts ever passed, the Endangered Species Act of 1973, which is one of the dozens of United States environmental laws passed in the 1970s. A species includes any species of fish, wildlife, or plant; any variety of plant; or any distinct population segment of any vertebrae species that interbreeds with nature. Excluded is any species of the class insects determined by the secretary to constitute a pest whose protection under the provisions of the Act would present an over-whelming and overriding risk to man. “Endangered species are those considered in imminent danger of extinction, while others are those likely to become endangered – least locally within the foreseeable future. Bald eagles, gray wolves, brown (grizzly bears), and sea otters, for instance with a number of native orchids and other rare plants, are considered to be locally threatened. Vulnerable species are naturally rare or have been locally depleted human activities to a level that puts them at risk. They often Research showed that one of the culprits was organoclorine pesticides and DDT which dramatically reduced breeding success. As animal species drastically tumbled towards extinction, the impetus for greater legal protection for the country’s most imperiled wildlife mounted. In 1966 the Endangered Species Act was passed. This strengthened was passed. This strengthened in 1969, and in 1973finally became the ESA.
