NPB 102, Summer 2011 Name:_____________________________________ Homework assignment #1 1 One of the fundamental conceptual issues in the study of animal behavior is the “levels of analysis” approach to formulating and analyzing hypotheses. For any behavior, both proximate and ultimate explanations are possible. Below are two different examples of observations regarding behavior, followed in each case by a list of hypotheses. For each, label each of the hypotheses as “proximate” (mechanistic) or “ultimate” (evolutionary) with a “P” or a “U.” In addition, attempt to subdivide those you consider “proximate” into “developmental/genetic” (with a “D” for developmental) or “immediate causal” (with a “C” for causal), and those you consider “ultimate” into “fitness-related” (with an “F” for fitness) or “historical” (with an “H” for historical). It should be relatively easy for you to make the initial distinction between proximate and ultimate, but you may find it to be challenging to assign some of them to level of analysis more specifically than that. For proximate hypotheses, it will be helpful if you ask yourself whether the hypothesis seems to be primarily about how the behavior develops or is inherited (i.e., a “P-D” hypothesis), or how the behavior is caused in an immediate sense (i.e., a “P-C” hypothesis). For ultimate hypotheses, it will be helpful if you ask yourself whether the hypothesis seems to be primarily about the historical path of evolutionary change (i.e., a “U-H” hypothesis), or about the fitness function of the behavior (i.e., a “U-F” hypothesis). 1.
