CYCLING, A SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORT MODE IN URBAN ENVIRONMENT Development has been an integral part of our society ever since the cave men’s time. Global advancement would not have been possible if people never wandered and explored, doubted or questioned, everything would be standstill. And this is why, undoubtedly, mobility has been one of the biggest fuelling factors in this evolution. Mobility, in the most basic form, refers to movement from one point to another. In this fast- moving world, “how” and “how soon” one reaches their destination determines the connectivity. The emissions from the transport sector estimated by the International Energy Agency (IEA) was found to be around 23% of the total GHG emissions [1] . Urban transportation account for around 40% emission of the total transport sector [2] . Transportation sector with a whopping 19.8% GHG emission is the second-largest source of GHG in Ireland as reported by the Environmental Protection Agency of Ireland [3] . The sector alone produced 55.6Mt of CO2 and 119Kt of NOx in the year 2015 [4] . With the growing population and vehicular emissions in urban cities across the world, cycling is a mode of transportation which is often considered by many urban planners. It is well known that economic, environmental and social are the three main pillars of sustainable development. Cycling is the most environmentally friendly mode of transportation. There is not much pollution involved excluding the fact that the manufacturing cycle involves consumption of minimal energy and resources which is, of course, a one-time process in many cases. Cycles
