February 11 th 2008 The United States sets up a regime in South Vietnam in 1954. US partitioned Vietnam into South and North. Diem’s regime alienated nearly everyone in the South. Full scale insurgency began against the Diem regime in 1960 (coalition of all anti-Diem groups, National Liberation Front – NLF). US overthrew Diem in Nov ’63, After South Vietnam (SV) had series of military juntas. 9 different cabinets in 32 months. Most of the high officers in the juntas had fought with the French. As the SV government weakened, US sent more aid and “advisors”. US blamed the insurgency on North Vietnam, but NV troops didn’t enter the South until late 1964. US escalation in March 1965, US started carpet bombing NV in March 1965. USSR and China had been willing to allow US to keep South Vietnam, they were only committed to preventing NV from collapsing, once bombing of North began, they increased aid to NV. US committed war crimes – 100 million lbs of toxins dropped on SV. Most Agent
