January 23 rd 2008 Prior to the war, there were 6 great powers in the world: 1. US 2. Britain 3. Germany 4. France 5. Japan 6. USSR At the end of the war, it was only the US that was left with its economy in tact. It came out of the world producing almost half (if not more) of the worlds products; food, its military was in the Pacific (occupied Japan) and Western Europe and the Middle East, exporting capital. The Administration at the time was the Truman Administration (1945-1953) early years of the post war policy. US Responsibilities post WWII: 1. Rebuilding Europe, Japan (industries) 2. Growing global economy (African, Latin, southeast Asian all will integrate) - Creates Marshall Plan - IMF - World Bank 3. Countering communists 4. UN (it is not only a US initiative) What was the US doing before WWII? - Intervening in Latin American countries (heavily involved in internal affairs pressuring them take policies that would be advantageous to the US) - Overthrow of certain governments for US benefit - Spanish-American war for the growth of the US as an imperial power.
