October 15 th 2007 Russia 1917 is an empire under a tsar (the Romanov Dynasty). The capital was Petrograd, what is now St. Petersburg The 5 th largest industrial empire in the world. 164 million people, 3.4 million are industrial workers. Rest are mostly peasants in agriculture. Agriculture is in the hand of the landlords, great deal of tension between peasants and landlords. The first time the soviets were formed as a result of Russia’s loss in its war with Japan in 1905. Soviet is a council of any kind; military, workers, peasants, etc. In 1905, a revolution in Petrograd occurs were commoners demanded changes. The government responded with a series of concessions and oppressions. One of its concessions was the duma (parliament). WWI: the tsar faces a second major crisis. 14 million men were mobilized in the army (this is was what terrified others – regardless of how good these men were). Russia was faced by Ottomans, Austro-Hungarian Empire and Germany Empire. They lost 3.3 Million. Over the war years, starvation, hunger, poverty, high prices (dissatisfaction on the home front).
