Melissa Murano Travelling Mindset In society today, people are too preoccupied with their daily lives to take a moment and enjoy what the world has to offer. In Alain de Botton’s essay, “On Habit,” idea of a travelling mindset is a useful tool in helping to understand our lives and others. In my opinion his idea of a travelling mindset was that people need to open their minds and must take that open-mindedness and apply it to our everyday lives in order to appreciate the things the world has to offer us. In Alain de Botton’s essay, Xavier de Maistre comes back from Barbados depressed to find that his hometown, London has not changed. He had seen such magnificent scenery and had done things he could never do at home. He believed that because he had went away that when he came back things would be different. Unfortunately, that is not how the world works. Instead the world does not change and we are forced to readapt when we come home from vacation. After being home he decides to apply the travelling mindset to his own home. He starts to explore his bedroom and begins to appreciate all the little things he had overlooked before. On his first adventure he begins to explore his bed and sofa. On his second trip around his room he explores a window ledge at night and the stars above. After exploring his bedroom he decides to take his travelling mindset out into his neighborhood. In his essay de Botton writes, “I forced
