Skin Facts The skin is the largest and one of the most important organs in the body. – 7% of body weight –1.8 m 2 (20 ft 2 ) of surface area – variable thickness (4mm: soles of feet, 1.5mm: eyelids) Why is the skin an organ? Functions of the Skin Physical Protection (UV light, microorganisms, water) Hydroregulation (sweat, dehydration, immersion) Thermoregulation (dilation, sweat, constriction) Sensory Reception (heat, cold, pressure, vibration, pain) Communication?? Layers of the Skin Epidermis – thin outer layer of stratified squamous cells Dermis – thicker inner layer of fibrous connective tissues *Hypoderm is Appendages of the skin – hair, nails, and glands Layers of the Skin Stratum Basale Stratum Spinosum Stratum Granulosum Stratum Lucidum Thin clear layer
