2 How Do We Measure Metabolic Rate? • Direct calorimetry - measure heat production • Indirect calorimetry - measure O 2 consumption Food + O 2 --> ATP + H 2 O + CO 2 + Heat Indirect Direct Direct vs. Indirect Calorimetry Direct vs. Indirect Calorimetry • Approximately 5 kcals of energy are expended for each liter of oxygen consumed Heat Production vs O 2 Consumption 5 kcals = 1 Liter of O 2 consumed
