Beijing Jiaotong University is one of the earliest founded universities in modern China and the first institution of higher education specialized in train- ing the management-oriented students. Over the past one hundred and eleven years, the University has had more than 100,000 outstanding graduates and is fulfilling the sacred mission of “knowledge leading the advancement, and education creating the future” by maintaining the school motto of “to learn and to practice”. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Chairman Mao Zedong appointed Dr. Mao Yisheng, academician and famous bridge expert, the president of the University in 1951. It was granted the qualification for recruiting the over- seas students in 1954. In 1960, the University was nominated as one of the key national universities. In 1981, it was approved with the qualification for conferring the Master and Doctor degrees and for reviewing and approving the titles of associate professor, professor and PhD’s supervisor. In 2000, the University was transferred from the Ministry of Railways to the Ministry of Education for direct administration. In 2003, Northern Jiaotong University resumed its name of “Beijing Jiaotong University”. In 2004, the University was approved by the Ministry of Education to set up the School of Postgraduates with 60 doctoral programs and 102 master programs. The University has now a total of 13,784 under- graduates, 7108 postgraduates and 34000 for distance learning and continuous education, to- gether with over 2670 faculty and staff, including 8 academicians of Chinese Academy of Science and Chinese Academy of Engineering, and 226 profes- sors and 524 associate professors. It owns the fixed assets of nearly RMB 1 billion yuan worth of teaching & research instruments and equipment.

The modern library has a collection of over 1 mil- lion books and four thousand kinds of periodicals in Chinese and foreign languages. Since the founding of Beijing Jiaotong Univer- sity, there have been many outstanding talents coming forth and with the students or disciples scattered around the whole country and even over the world. The University has brought about many experts and scholars such as Mr. Zheng Zhenduo, a famous literary historian, archaeolo- gist and social activist in China, Mr. Jin Shixuan, the initiator and founder of the discipline of railway transportation in China, Mr. Liu Han, the founder of the first wireless broadcasting station in China, Mr. Yang Rumei, one of the four fa- mous Chinese accounting experts in 1920s, etc.
