Florida International University • Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering • Miami SENIOR DESIGN ORGANIZATION PROJECT DESCRIPTIONS Spring 2011 LIFT MECHANISM FOR MEDICAL PERFUSION EQUIPMENT FOR THE MIAMI CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL Team 1: Daniel Rodriguez, Elmer Gutierrez, Michael Ma rtinez The inter‐hospital transfer of patients from the Pediatriic Intensive C Unit (PICU) is a delicate Care
and well‐choreographed task amongst medical professionals. Among all the risks associated during patient transport, consistent and reliable perfor mance of life support equipment is the responsibility of the directing physicians as well as th e supporting clinical engineering staff. Failure or erratic performance of such equipment most commonly results in further injury or death in many cases. In an effort to increase the likelihood of a successful patient transfer, Miami Children’s Hospital (MCH) has commissioned t he design and manufacture of a lifting mechanism that will elevate a perfusion equipment ve hicle (affectionately named “Wall‐E” by the MCH Staff) from ground level and gently place the e quipment on an ambulance floor. Wall‐E is fitted with real time hematological monitorin g and regulating equipment essential in sustaining patient conditions during transit. Dr. Jorge Ojito is the directing perfusion specialist in charge of the PICU transfers from local, national and international based hospitals to MCH. During current transport endeavors, Wall‐E is physically lifted and placed into the ambulance by y
two to three paramedics. The purpose of developing a lifting mechanism for Wall‐E is to introduce a level of reliability and smooth operation not available manually. Otherwise, equipment vital to a patient’s stability may be disconnec ted. The mechanism designed must observe several constra ints stipulated by Dr. Ojito and the MCH t
administration. Most importantly among these constra ints, are the retention of area currently a
occupied and the reduction of the overall height. Addit ionally, it must be easily manipulated to facilitate daily cleansing and regularly scheduled m aintenance. All components must be manufactured from FDA approved materials such that the hygienic integrity of all the present components/supplies is preserved. FDA codes and prod uct related patents or copyrights may or may not apply as per this report’s investigation. La stly, a secondary/auxiliary/emergency backup lifting avenue must be provided should there be any system malfunction. These accommodations secure a viable solution should the host or neighboring equipment require an auxiliary energy source. To that effect, standardized and commonly utilized components will be employed in all features of the product. Stowed away within the products assembly, tools and replacement components shall also be provided. Additionally, warning and directional images will provide a universal medium of communication to ease the equipment’s operation while avoiding complications. ...
