Chronology of Reading Chall (1979) Stage 0 (birth - first grade) reading prerequisites (knowing letters, words,  cover, where to start reading- left to right) sounds and phonemes come together. 26 words and 44 sound combos. Six –> s-i-hk-s ,  three words but 4 sounds third grade) Stage 3 (fourth - eighth grade) reading to learn Stage 4 (high school) comprehending multiple viewpoints in written text Teaching Children to Read 1. Bottom up process - children learn the individual components of reading 1 2. Top down process - goals background, and expectations determine  what is selected from text w Instruction in the early grades often emphasizes one over the other Dyslexia
