Neurotransmitters are the body’s chemical messengers. His doctors might be concerned about the acetylcholine in his body because he is experiencing muscle weakness. Since acetylcholine stimulates skeletal muscles to contract, Randy could be experiencing problems with this neurotransmitter because he has muscle weakness. Another neurotransmitter his doctors might be worried about is dopamine. High levels of dopamine are associated with schizophrenia, a mental illness with the symptoms of hallucinations and delusions. Since Randy has been experiencing delusions, he may have a high level of dopamine in his brain. Hormones, such as leptin, in the hypothalamus regulate body weight by informing the body when it has had enough food and reduces the appetite in order to feel full.
