This system was designed for analogue voice transmission and is inadequate for modern communication needs. In 1984 one agreed to build a new, fully digital, circuit switched telephone system. This new system, called (N-)ISDN has as its primary goal the integration of voice and non voice services and uses TDM (time division multiplexing) to achieve this.(TDM is not applicable for analogue transmission). It knew a slow growth. Main disadvantages: circuit switched and 64 kbps based.
