Definition : SIP is a lightweight, generic signalling protocol for multimedia over IP. Used for : ◗ set-up, modify and terminate sessions (Internet phone calls, multimedia conferences like distance learning and videoconference) ◗ two or more party sessions Architecture Addressing SIP Scenario Messages SDP Traces What is SIP Extensibility Interoperability Client Scenario Links SIP is a signaling protocol that is used to set up, modify and terminate sessions, like Internet phone calls and multimedia conferences (e.g. distance learning) between two (or more) participants. Like MGCP, it is a text-based protocol. Work on SIP began in late 1996 as a way of inviting users to join MBONE sessions. It was not until 1998, when the spec was approved as an RFC by the IETF, that SIP began to gain acceptance as an IP telephony protocol. 6 2001 Alcatel University Antwerp 770 00438 9030-VHBE Ed.01 6 What is SIP ? Properties of SIP : ◗ text-based protocol : commands are sent as simple text ◗ Client-Server protocol : SIP uses the request- response model (similar syntax and semantics to HTTP) Architecture Addressing SIP Scenario Messages SDP Traces What is SIP Extensibility Interoperability Client Scenario Links SIP is also a client-server protocol , this means that it uses a ”request- response” model. This is the same structural model used by HTTP.
