The power of SONET already convinced the telecommunication industry that it has tremendous capability to carry digital signals at gigabit per sec and beyond. SONET does not care what kind of package it carries as long as the package fits into it’s frame. There is no dispute when SONET was carrying non-Internet traffic. The debate or dispute started when the Internet grew explosively and network community and Telco started looking for carrying huge Internet traffic over SONET. We know TCP/IP is the standard protocol for internet and it is IP (Internet protocol) traffic that is growing exponentially. On the other hand it is not only data that is being carried over SONET, there are voice, video that may come into the picture. So the debate started between Network community and Telecos - how to bundle these data before putting onto SONET frame. Is it possible to run IP over SONET directly? If possible, how? Or should we run IP over SONET via ATM? In this talk we will see the advantage and disadvantages of the implementation of these logics and some solutions to tackle the problem of carrying huge Internet traffics. Later we will see what Nortel is planning to accommodate IP traffic in our SONET technology.

2 Shaheedul Huq Page 2 Date: 03/26/98 Version: 0.3 Subject: IP/ATM over SONET Global Transmission Operations Contents • SONET, IP, and ATM • OSI Model • ATM over SONET - is it necessary • Implementation of IP over SONET • Routers and SONET Internet • Packet on SONET at NORTEL » IP over SONET (Dakota) » IP-based solution (Nebraska) » Data Transport Node (Montana) Before starting the session let’s see what we have in our agenda: First I’ll explain the definition of the basic building blocks of today’s data communication - what are SONET, IP, and ATM ? Then we will visit the OSI Model to see where IP, ATM, SONETs are located. Then we will see the advantages and disadvantages of ATM over SONET. Then I’ll talk Why IP over SONET is more logical choice for network community and how to implement it over SONET. We will see in implementing that we need high speed Routers and the end to end network with high speed routers and SONET is called SONET Internet. Then very briefly I’ll talk about Nortel’s Data Transport technologies and it’s future products. IP over SONET (Dakota) IP-based solution (Nebraska) Data Transport Node (Montana) EIM and TCM
