Unformatted text preview: PLANAR TRUSS STRUCTURE ANALYSIS T2-1 TUTORIAL T2 PLANAR TRUSS STRUCTURE ANALYSIS Analysis of the planar truss structure shown below is the subject of both tutorials, T2 and T3. The use of Abaqus/CAE's Menu bar, Module menu and the context sensitive Toolbox area is emphasized in negotiating the present tutorial, and for that matter all tutorials going forward except T3. Tutorial T3 instead emphasizes the use of /CAE's Model Tree. Accomplished /CAE users undoubtedly use a combination of all these tools. Consider the symmetrical truss structure and load system shown below, which is also the subject of Tutorial T3. The material used is steel having a modulus of elasticity E equal to 29.0 10 6 psi , and the cross-sectional area A equals 1.0 in 2 for each member. A finite element structural analysis is to be performed using Abaqus/CAE. Symmetry is to be exploited in the analysis. The deflections at each joint, the reaction forces at the supports, and the forces and stresses in each member are to be determined. Whenever symmetry exists in the geometry, loading, and material properties for a structure, the analyst should be able to recognize this symmetry and exploit it in the analysis of the structure. The methodology for exploiting symmetry is featured in this tutorial. * Launch Abaqus/CAE. Start\Programs\Abaqus 6.8-1\Abaqus CAE * Begin by creating a model database. &amp;gt;press Create Model Database PLANAR TRUSS STRUCTURE ANALYSIS T2-2 * The new model database has the default name Model-1. Rename the database Truss. Model\Rename\Model-1 &amp;gt;&amp;quot;Truss&amp;quot; &amp;gt;OK * Save the model database (the .cae extension will append automatically in the directory). &amp;gt;File\Save as... &amp;gt;&amp;quot;Truss&amp;quot; &amp;gt;OK =============================================================== PREPROCESSING PHASE * A new part in the form of a deformable, planar, wire structure having a size of 100 inches on a side is to be created. The approximate size entered for the Sketcher grid is reckoned at four times this characteristic dimension, and then rounded down. In this case the approximate size is 400. Module Part Part\Create... &amp;gt;Truss &amp;gt;push 2D Planar &amp;gt; push Deformable &amp;gt; push Wire &amp;gt;&amp;quot;400&amp;quot; &amp;gt;press Continue... PLANAR TRUSS STRUCTURE ANALYSIS T2-3 * A grid should appear in the Viewport, so that the analyst is now working with the Sketcher. Use the following Toolbar buttons to manipulate the grid to the center of the Viewport. Click MB2 (the center mouse button) to expeditiously quit any tool operation. Alternatively, depressing MB3 discloses a shortcut popup menu to related view manipulation tool options including cancellation of the tool. &amp;gt;select Magnify View tool &amp;gt;Drag cursor to the left across the grid until entire grid fits in the Viewport and click MB2.
