Unformatted text preview: PLANAR FRAME STRUCTURE ANALYSIS T4-1 TUTORIAL T4 PLANAR FRAME STRUCTURE ANALYSIS The deformation and support reactions of the idealized rigid steel frame shown are to be determined via a structural analysis using Abaqus/CAE and the two-node, cubic beam element, B23. The moment diagram for the beam and column are to be constructed from the calculated reactions. The maximum combined stress in the beam and column is to be hand-calculated using the section properties I b = 11 . 87 in 4 , A b = 2 . 81in 2 , and I c = 1 . 554in 4 , A c = 1 . 104in 2 , respectively. A special feature of this tutorial is the appropriate handling of the discrete elastic spring element shown at the joint. Called a rotation connector, it is created and defined, "tied" to the beam/column joint, and "grounded," within Module Interaction. Modeling skills and Abaqus/CAE features address in this tutorial include: A. Preprocessing: (a) Assignment of beam element cross-section and orientation properties, (b) Use of the Interaction Module to specify a connector element. B. Solution processing: (a) Linear frame analysis using the two-node, cubic beam element. C. Post-processing: (a) Interpretation of report file output data to support construction of shear and moment diagrams. PLANAR FRAME STRUCTURE ANALYSIS T4-2 * Launch Abaqus/CAE and create a model database. Start\Programs\Abaqus 6.8-1\ Abaqus CAE >select Create Model Database * Rename the model Partial Frame. Model\Rename\Model-1 >"Partial Frame" >OK * Save the Partial Frame model database (the .cae extension is appended automatically). File\Save as... >"Partial Frame" >OK =============================================================== PLANAR FRAME STRUCTURE ANALYSIS T4-3 PREPROCESSING PHASE * Create a deformable, planar, wire structure on a grid having an approximate size of 300 inches (i.e., 4 80 rounded down). Module Part Part\Create... >"Partial Frame " >push 2D Planar >push Deformable >push Wire >"300" >Continue...(the Sketcher grid should appear) * Note the prompt at the bottom of the viewport "Sketch the section of the wire." In the Prompt area enter the start and end coordinate data points to create the frame as two connected line segments (as an alternative to picking points). >select the Create Lines: Connected tool in the Sketcher toolbox. >"0.0,51" >"80,51" >"80,0.0" (deselect the tool to exit; or press the X- button to erase and start over if necessary) >press Done PLANAR FRAME STRUCTURE ANALYSIS T4-4 * Use tools from the View menu to adjust and center the frame as desired within the Viewport. Alternatively, select the tool icons directly in the Toolbar area. Depressing MB1 and dragging the mouse operates the selected tools. MB1 and dragging the mouse operates the selected tools....
