Unformatted text preview: PLANE STRESS ANALYSIS OF VIERENDEEL TRUSS T8-1 TUTORIAL T8 PLANE STRESS ANALYSIS OF VIERENDEEL TRUSS A Vierendeel truss is a lightweight deep beam or girder structural concept. Determine the deformation and stress state of the aluminum alloy Vierendeel truss shown below, in particular the maximum stress around the lightening or access holes. Exploit symmetry in the solution. In the results, observe that the flow of stress along the top and bottom regions, resembles that in the top and bottom chords for a truss structure. Dimensions are in inches. Abaqus/CAE features and modeling skills addressed in this tutorial include: A. Preprocessing: (a) Exploiting symmetry (b) Solids modeling - create fillets - create semi-circular area cutouts (c) Method for defining edges along which loads and boundary conditions are imposed. B. Solution processing: (a) Two-dimensional meshing with quadrilateral elements (b) High order quadrilateral elements with reduced integration (c) Plane stress analysis. C. Post-processing: (a) Contour plots for displacement, in-plane principal stress, von Mises stress, and bending stress (b) Graphing stress results using "Node list." PLANE STRESS ANALYSIS OF VIERENDEEL TRUSS T8-2 * Launch Abaqus/CAE and create a model database named VTruss. Start\All Programs\Abaqus 6.8-2\ Abaqus CAE >press Create Model Database Model\Rename\Model-1 >"VTruss" >OK * Save the model database (the .cae extension will append automatically). File\Save As... >"VTruss" >OK =============================================================== PREPROCESSING PHASE * Create a new part in the form of a planar structure (i.e., Base Feature is Shell). The basic pattern of the VTruss is that of a rectangular plate with weight-saving or access cutouts. It is a girder with a deep narrow cross-section. Only the structure to the left (or right) of the symmetry line need be modeled. Fillets and semicircles for its cutouts are sketched using the Create Arc tool while picking points, or while entering coordinate data in the Prompt area. Straight lines are sketched by dragging and clicking with the Create Lines tool. Any line sketched incorrectly can be erased using the Delete Entities tool without having to begin the entire sketch anew....
