SYNOPSIS: Swisher Mower and Machine Company (SMC)produces zero turn mowers, handheld lawn and garden products. The company was founded in 1945 and is based in Warrensburg, Missouri. In 1995, the company sold 4,200 riding mowers and recorded total company sales of $4.3 million. SMC produced three types of lawn mower units in early 1996,the Ride King, is a three wheel riding mower that has a zero turning radius; trailmower called T-44, is a triler type mower that has a cutting width of 44 inches; kits, is a developed product from T-44. SMC distributes its lawn mower through farm supply stores, lawn and garden stores home centers, and hardware sotred located in nonmetropolitan areas. SMC distributes the Ride King mower through wholesale distributors that supply independent dealers and directly to dealers and located throught the country, but they mainly supply farm dealers situated in the south central and southeastern United States. TOWS ANALYSIS 1. Threat - The characteristics of the sales trend of SMC’s riding mowers tend to indicate that the product is in the mature stage of its life cycle (SMC’s sales trend is stagnant while the industry sales trend is rising). This is a threat that SMC must promptly manage. - There is an opportunity of loosing big market share, if SCM did not take the merchandise retail proposal. 2. Opportunities - Max has always insisted that his company be customer-oriented in recognizing and providing for both dealer and end-user needs. - Maintaining a “small company” image have an important aspect of business philosophy which turn to good personal relatioship with dealers and customers - A strong loyalty from SMC dealers and distributors that help improve the sales foundation.
