Edwin Powell Hubble was born on November 20, 1889 in Marshfield, Missouri, to an insurance  executive father John Powell Hubble and  mother Virginia Lee James. He was seen as a very important  figure and astronomer in the 20 th  century. Hubble moved from Missouri to Chicago, Illinois in 1898. He  was not always seen as a scientific genius; he was very athletic during high school and his university  He also set the Illinois state high jump record. In college, Hubble played basketball for University of  Chicago and even coached basketball later on in his life. At the University of Chicago Hubble earned a  bachelor of science concentrating his studies on mathematics, astronomy, and philosophy. After earning  his bachelors as one of the university's first Rhodes Scholars, he then spent three years at The Queen's  College, Oxford studying law. After his extensive years of education, Hubble was part of the army during WWI. Upon his  return to the U.S.A., he decided to get his Doctorate degree in astronomy in 1917. Two years later in  1919 Hubble is offered a job at Mount Wilson observatory. It is here where Hubble begins his  exceptional career and work in the field of astronomy. Mount Wilson housed the 100 inch Hooker  telescope, the largest one in the world at the time. Before Hubble’s work it was believed that everything
